Croatia

I visited Croatia as part of a trip to Slovenia in the summer of 2017. We drove from near Ljubljana in Slovenia to the island of Krk, finally putting down roots in Baška, a picturesque little beach resort to the southeast of Krk. We only stayed for around 3 days in total, but this was enough to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a thoroughly relaxing beach break!

Swimming & the beach

My favourite activity during this holiday was hands down swimming in the sea. As it was the summer and around 30 degrees c, the relative chill of the sea was welcome. The beach itself was a shingle/stony one rather than sand, however this did mean that the waters were super clear, and getting sand anywhere and everywhere was not an issue! There was a small area of trees nearby to the beach, which brought some welcome shade, since we found that this beach lacked a bit in the shade department. I would therefore advise anyone thinking of visiting this beach to pack plenty of sunscreen and a hat at the very minimum!

Cuisine & attractions

The food here was decent – we didn’t have anything particularly traditional or out of the ordinary however. I would say that the fresh calamari was nice, and believe that this region is known for the quality of its calamari. Activities-wise, we didn’t really stay long enough here to work out which activities were “goers” or not, however we were invited on a pirate boat tour and BBQ (but had to politely decline this due to lack of time!) and we saw quite a few tourists out to sea in pedalos, which looked pretty fun, if a little hot in the heat of the Croatian summer!

Nightlife

The evening entertainment at Baška seemed relatively muted, however it did strike me as more of a family friendly resort than a lively youthful one. Tourists were often out and about in the daytime, at the beach or in the restaurants nearby, and returned to their hotels for the evenings. We did visit a laid back beach bar one evening for cocktails… and ended up with a free half bottle of champagne courtesy of the table next to us, so that was a fun memory! Subsequently forgetting where the door to our apartment was on the way back was a bit of a low point, mind…

Seeking further Croatian adventures!

This really was a whistle stop tour of a tiny part of Croatia. I would love to see more of this country in the future – of particular interest to me are the Plitvice Lakes and the ancient walled city of Dubrovnik. If any of my readers have been to either of these places, please do reach out and let me know – I would love to know how you found it and whether you would recommend!
